Welcome to Playa del Carmen and Diving Playa!!!
Playa del Carmen is the best starting point for all your diving excursions along the Riviera Maya! And even after diving or on those days on which you prefer to stay out of the water, Playa del Carmen has plenty to offer. Just a short ride away you can find many important Maya ruins, beautiful beaches, idyllic mexican villages, lush jungle, natural reserves, theme parks, and much, much more for you to discover. In the town itself you have many shops, bars, restaurants and a great nightlife, which will keep you entertained until the early hours.
Of course what we prefer over all at Diving Playa is the diving!
Playa del Carmen has a plenitude of dive sites available for divers of all experience levels.
The diving in Playa del Carmen is divided into local diving, Cenotes and Cozumel.
Local Diving:
Playa del Carmen is located in the Caribbean on the Meso American Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world. This gives divers a great choice of beautiful local dive sites, which by boat are no more than 15 minutes away.
The sites can be explored by divers of all levels, as they vary from depths between 6m / 18ft and 30m / 100ft.
On the menu we have Tortuga, the famous turtle reef, Sabalos where we can occasionally still see a big school of Sabalos / Tarpons, Los Arcos named after it's two beautiful arches, Cerebros made from massive brain coral structures, the Mama ViƱa wreck, Jardines, a beautiful coral garden, and many, many more.
Every winter the bull sharks come back to the local reefs of Playa del Carmen and a spectacular bull shark dive is added to the menu. If you are here during that time you should not miss it!
Cenotes:
The Riviera Maya has the biggest underground river system in the world, which offers a great variety of Cenotes to be discovered by the recreational diver. The Cenotes will not stop to surprise you with amazing speleological formations such as stalacmites, stalactites and fossils, tunnels and passages, which have been formed over the last 40 million years.
As a recreational diver you would typically like to explore Cenotes such as Chac Mool, Kukulcan, Dos Ojos or El Eden. But these are only a few examples of what we have on offer.
When diving the Cenotes you will be guided by a professional diver with a full cave diver certification. This guide is trained to penetrate into any underwater cave or cavern system following all the safty mesures nessesary.
When guiding groups of recreational divers, the guide will take you only as far as to the cavern areas of the Cenotes. There it is guaranteed that you always see the day light, always have an exit point no further away than one minute, and that there are no restrictions through which two divers cannot pass at the same time. This gives you the guarantee that your dive will be safe at all times and that you can fully focus on enjoying the dive.
Cozumel:
Cozumel is the island situated right in front of Playa del Carmen. Since Jaques Cousteau documented the islands sea life in the 60ies and declared it as one of his favorite dive sites, divers have elected it as a prime location.
Cozumel is also part of the Meso American Reef and offers more than 30 beautiful dive sites protected by a marine park. When diving Cozumel you must always take the current into consideration, as it will accompany you on every dive.
In Cozumel you can find two kinds of dive sites. The first kind is located on a platform which has depths from 10m / 30ft to 15m / 45ft, and is known for shallower dive sites such as Colombia Shallows, Paraiso or Yucab. The second kind is the drop off or wall with depths from 15m / 45ft downwards. The wall contains some of Cozumels most spectacular dive sites including Santa Rosa, Colombia or Palancar. Sites a passionate diver should not miss.
PADI Courses:
If you are not a certified diver yet you can enroll in a PADI course and become a PADI Open Water Diver. You can also choose to participate in the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program, where you will get a taste of what diving is like.
For certified divers the possibility of developing their skills to a more advanced level is also available through courses such as the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, PADI Rescue Diver or a variety of PADI Speciality courses. For those who want to go one step further, you can also train to become a PADI Divemaster or Instructor.
